Abstract

The advanced requirements of the transparent building envelopes include safety, durability, high thermal and sound resistance, possibilities for controlled transmittance in the solar spectrum, low embodied energy, carbon footprint and cost. The simultaneous achievement of these desirable features is difficult - the design of facades and the choice of the glazing systems are implemented at reasonable compromises. This paper details a case study of the performance of insulating window systems in reha- bilitated residential building in Bulgaria, taking into account the reduction of the energy demands for the heating, the energy payback time and the thermal loads at the facades with different orientations.
